Video: Norristown Child Care Center's Children On Local News Site

Some children from MELC's Norristown Center were filmed attempting to beat the heat at MLK Park by Norristown Patch, an online local news source.

Norristown Child Care Center's Preschoolers Bridging Over!

"Our children are ready for kindergarten."

Tracy Gass, Director of the MELC Norristown Center, welcomed a crowd of children and proud parents with these words.  On June 1, 22 MELC pre-schoolers received their diplomas and officially became kindergarten students.

Brianna Johnson is excited about going to kindergarten.  When asked, she said she would "meet new friends and learn about letters, words and flowers."

Principal Joanne Gillespie of Hancock Elementary participated in the ceremony, symbolizing the new educators the children will be nurtured by in the coming years.

"Many times we can tell which children went to preschool, and which children went to a structured preschool," said Ms. Gillesipe.  "Work habits are so important throughout the learning process, so that if the young learners can pick up the work ethic/work habits in the early years, they usually have better academic success in school.  At preschool, children have the opportunity to start to develop a solid work ethic."

Ms. Gillespie said that parents are welcome to make appointments during the summer months to visit the school which the child will attend, in order to help prepare them for their new experiences.

Rashida Silver mother of Zaria Kelsey, said that the time her daughter was with MELC went by so fast, but that she knew Zaria was prepared and ready for kindergarten based on what she had been taught at MELC.

Volunteers from Deloitte Help to Plant Our Gardens

Special thanks to the volunteers who joined us June 10 at the Families First Center to plant vegetable gardens for the children, and give the classes a chance to plant some seeds of their own.

Volunteers celebrating Deloitte Consulting LLP’s Impact Day worked to plant three gardens (even building a garden box), planted with the children, and worked with them in coloring books they donated to discuss how plants grow and what kinds of vegetables they might grow.

The event was particularly special, in that many of the children in the West Philadelphia center may never have had an opportunity to plant a garden of their own.

Deloitte also donated a portable gazebo that the classes will be able to use for outdoor activities such as reading or art projects.
